Practice pilates, learn to surf or perform in a play around Kingscliff and Tweed Heads

From Tweed Heads to the coastal town of Kingscliff, and the relaxed beachside suburb of Casuarina, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to sport and recreation activities in the Tweed Shire. Just south of the Queensland border, these places get to enjoy all the great weather of the Gold Coast, but without the crowds!

So whether you’d like to make a splash, tee off in style, hit the gym or prefer your recreation to be a little more ‘creative’, you’re sure to find something that suits you, right here in the most northern part of the Northern Rivers region.

Water sports

You can’t go past the pristine Tweed River around Tweed Heads for jet skiing, boating or water skiing. With boat ramps on Kennedy Drive and Dry Dock Road, there are plenty of options to explore this beautiful waterway.

Ideal for all ages and abilities, the Tweed Coast Surf School at Hastings Beach will have you feeling at home on a board in no time. They have private one-on-one lessons if you’re a bit shy or want to work on something specific, or group lessons that you could get the whole family involved in. They also offer a variety of school holiday, junior surf and surf grom squads.

The Cudgen Creek Estuary is a popular spot for snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming and fishing. Hire your equipment from the Water Sports Guru and make a day of it – they also offer surfing lessons, whale watching tours and much more.

When you’re living close to water, it’s always a great idea to give kids confidence in their ability to swim. CABA Water Babies at Cabarita Beach provides aquatic education from birth to 10-year-olds, helping them to develop water safety skills and awareness in a fun, nurturing environment.

If you’re keen to get in amongst everything beach- and surf-related, check out the Cudgen Surf Club in Kingscliff and the Salt Surf Lifesaving Club at Salt beach – both offer all the elements we know and love about surf lifesaving clubs. From nippers to carnivals, junior sports and senior sports, there are heaps of ways to get active.

Sports Clubs

Twin Towns Service Club, Club Tweed, Twin Towns Club Banora and South Tweed Sports Clubs offer a range of sports options in and around Tweed Heads itself. From golf to lawn bowls to running, swimming and triathlons, these clubs are a hive of local activity.

Cudgen Leagues Club is the major sports centre for Kingscliff, offering cricket, touch football, rugby league and more, while Kingscliff Hockey Club is just across the road.

Whether you’re a pro, or just starting out, the Chinderah Golf Club welcomes all players to their course and driving range. It’s a beautiful 18-hole course, with hundreds of native trees, shrubs and plants all providing a park-like feel.

Pottsville Sports is more than just a bowling club, it’s a place where everyone is welcome to enjoy the friendly community atmosphere. Live entertainment is a regular part of the calendar, and it’s also the perfect place to grab a drink and something to eat with friends. Every night there is a special in the restaurant (two pizzas for $20 on Sunday’s is our pick of the bunch), as well as raffles, bingo, trivia and so much more!

Situated right on the beach, the Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club has three dedicated bowling greens, a lively club and cafe, and a busy social calendar.

Gyms and classes

The Village Gym is the home of health and fitness for the coastal village of Pottsville. There’s a modern gymnasium with premium fitness equipment, a swim school, small group training classes, allied health services and a creche for parents and caregivers to drop their little ones while they work out.

Loft Pilates in Pottsville is another great place to get moving. With experienced pilates instructors on hand, the beautifully designed boutique studio in the centre of town is home to the latest, state-of-the-art pilates equipment. If you want to balance your body, this could be your new local go-to.

Xcell Health and Fitness in Kingscliff is a 24-hour gym with excellent facilities and a busy roster of classes including yoga and pilates, as well as a dedicated over-50s programme.

Tweed Heads in home to several gyms, offering everything from FITT training to tailored programs for the over 50’s. You also have the PCYC Tweed Heads which hosts a gym, programs from local youth and school holiday programs for the kids.

Performing Arts and Theatre in the Tweed region

Sometimes the best way to keep active is through creativity and expression, and if that sounds like something your children may be interested in, check out the Kingscliff Performing Arts centre. They have a variety of classes available, including a range of dance genres, acrobatics and musical theatre. It’s no secret that these kinds of extracurricular activities can really help to build confidence and resilience, and encourage a sense of belonging.

There’s also the Tweed Theatre Company, based at Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah. This well-established organisation regularly stages auditions for the young and young-at-heart, running local performances of popular stage shows and musicals.
