Activities for the whole family
Circus Arts in Byron Bay offers school holiday programs for children and the only winter night markets under the big top – 23 June & 15 September 2023, 6PM • Byron Bay • Family friendly
With six acres of family attractions, Australian wildlife and boutique shopping, the Macadamia Castle, recently renamed to Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, has become a firm favourite of the region. You’ll find them at 419 Hinterland Way Knockrow NSW 2479, close to Lennox Head.
Crystal Castle also has a children’s playground. It’s truly a magical place for everyone.
Winter is absolutely the best time to go horse riding in the hinterland. It’s much cooler and easier for the horses and more comfortable for you.
Pegasus Park Equestrian Centre ‒ 15 minutes west of Byron Bay
This equestrian centre was established back in 1994. It caters for all levels of riders including beginners, nervous adults and children. They also have a safety induction program if you’ve never ridden before. This will get you acquainted with the horses and teach you the basics.
They offer both group and private rides where you can enjoy the wonderful experience of seeing the countryside on horseback.
Kyllarie Retreat ‒ near Murwillumbah This family-owned horse riding school offers group or single lessons as well as group activities for kids during the school holidays. They also cater for birthday parties.

Crystal Castle ‒ near Byron Bay
If you’re in need of a little tranquillity and love crystals, a visit to Crystal Castle is a must. Lying in the hinterland behind Byron Bay, Crystal Castle features two of the tallest crystals in the world. Here you can wander through the peaceful Shambhala Gardens and rainforest, or sit for a while in the ancient amethyst cave. You can also view the largest stone Blessing Buddha in Australia and join one of the daily Crystal Sound Healing sessions.
There are plenty of things to do and see around the Northern Rivers hinterland during the winter. It’s a great time to get out and explore some of the natural wonders around the region.
